Everything about Zwiebelkuchen totally explainedZwiebelkuchen, which literally means onion cake in the German language, is a one-crust pie made of steamed onions, diced bacon, cream, and caraway seed on a yeast dough or a leavened dough. It is particularly popular in the German wine-growing-regions mostly of Rheinhessen, the Palatinate, Franconia, and Swabia. A similar pie called Flammkuchen is also eaten in Alsace.
Usually “Zwiebelkuchen” is served hot with a glass of wine in the evening. In the autumn, however, it's traditionally accompanied by Federweißer, a very new wine.
